Our Stories, With All Their Ups and Downs!

Galeri 77 is offering a special selection to all art enthusiasts, put together by focusing on the power of stories in the rapidly changing world of today. Eleven artists, including Rafael Megall and Vav Hakobyan who are already widely acclaimed in Europe and US and will be debuting in Turkey, along with Tigran Tsitoghdzyan who is counted amongst the prodigies in the art scene, will be exhibited in Contemporary Istanbul 2018 which will be held between the 20th and the 23rd of September.

The world is changing at a great pace! Today, the effects of technology are penetrating our lives more than ever before, taking hold of us with newly instruments each day, expanding their influence in our daily lives. Young and old alike, everyone seems to be convinced that it is not possible to live without our smartphones, laptops or tablet computers. Because of our newly found connection with tech gadgets, we have grown more individualistic and isolated, communicating only through these media, pronouncing how we feel to our circle, even the world, through these gadgets. Whether we’re happy, sad, wronged, anxious, defiant or even crying out for help; even when sharing our little secrets and ravings we are not hesitant to turn to our gadgets, divulging ourselves to anyone whether they are related or not. At this point of history, we all have numerous “stories” to tell about, with no fewer words to share. According to the academics who have been working on this issue, we are moving past the “information age”, towards “reputation age”. We are in an era where whoever has the most followers, whoever asserted their dominance through their narratives are applauded, even considered experts no matter their past achievements or success.

In such an atmosphere, the artists themselves have a lot to talk about, a lot of stories to tell. These are visual stories: dreams, hopes and epic narratives rich in irony and humour, from the sweetest to most cruel, exposing the stark truth; visual stories of melancholy that we somehow come across, stories that even provide us with a sanctuary, a perfect get-away from time to time…

Galeri 77 is putting together a very special exhibition which is compiled from all these “bitter sweet stories” for this year’s Contemporary Istanbul. This collection, the works in which are predominantly expressionist, neo-pop, neo-surreal and contemporary; is confronting us with the fact that we are all in similar moods and thoughts, through the individual stories created by the conditions of the rapidly changing world of today. Another purpose of the exhibition is to make us stop for a moment and catch our breath in all the commotion of life, appreciate the good things happening around us by means of energy created by visual narrative.

With its exclusive exhibition, Galeri 77 showcases the works of Ara Alekian, Gurgen Babayan, Vahram Davtian, Sedat Girgin, Vav Hakobyan, İlhan Koman, Rafael Megall, Daron Mouradian, Mikayel Ohanjanyan, Armén Rotch and Tigran Tsitoghdzyan. The exhibition can be seen between 11:00 and 20:00 in booth A1-130, located in Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC), Rumeli Hall ground floor during Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair which will be held on 20-23rd of September 2018.
